CRMA Members Only Event Riveted with Grant Wood's Overalls

May 24, 2023, 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Watch the American Experience documentary Riveted: The Story of Jeans then view Overalls: Grant Wood's Depictions of Denim exhibition.

Join us for this unique opportunity to learn about the history of denim and then how Grant Wood depicted denim in his artwork.

Riveted: The History of Jeans reveals the fascinating and surprising story of this iconic American garment. At any given moment, half the people on the planet are wearing them. They have become a staple of clothing the world over, worn by everyone from presidents and supermodels to farmers and artists. More than just an item of apparel, America’s tangled past is woven into the indigo blue fabric. From its roots in slavery to its connection to the Wild West, youth culture, the civil rights movement, rock and roll, hippies, high fashion and hip-hop, jeans are the canvas on which the history of American ideology and politics is writ large.

Overalls: Grant Wood's Depictions of Denim - Jeans are the ubiquitous American garment. Its history documents both the good and bad in American society and reveals a great deal about American culture. Grant Wood is well-known for appearing in his working uniform, overalls. Made of denim, they were not only a great working outfit but also referenced his youth growing up on a farm. But overalls were used for far more than farming and depictions of overalls, denim, and jeans appear frequently in his work. This exhibition looks at depictions of denim in Wood’s work and the implications of their appearance.

Following the screening of Riveted, attendees will be able to view the Grant Wood exhibit. Light refreshments will be served.
