Taking Shape: Recent Acquisitions in the Fine Art of Craft

March 9, 2013 - February 23, 2014

Dewey Garrett, R/B, 2004, palm wood, dye, ebonized walnut insert, 6 ¾ x 10 ¼”, gift of the artist, 2005.013.
Building upon the foundation of A Show of Hands, the 2010-2012 exhibition celebrating the growth of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art’s ceramics collection, Taking Shape continues this investigation by presenting recent acquisitions not only in ceramics, but in many of the decorative arts. While ceramics still dominate the Museum’s acquisitions in this field, Taking Shape also includes work in glass, wood, and metal. Most of these are by contemporary artists, although older work has also been acquired in an effort to show the continuum within a medium.

Bringing together more than 80 extraordinary works from the collection, this exhibition celebrates a series of recent acquisitions, while exploring the shifting nature of the decorative arts and the play between utilitarian and sculptural qualities.

This exhibition has been made possible in part by the Momentum Fund of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

The Taking Shape exhibit is awesome! I was blown away by so many of the fabulous and unique designs from bold to delicate, and colors and textures in the all the many mediums such as wood, metal, glass, porcelian and clay.
